Tweetsie Railroad Blowing Rock NC is one of the oldest family oriented, continuously operating theme parks in the country. It began back in 1957 and since then generations of families have visited this park as part of their High Country vacations to the NC Mountains.
Long before the park opened, residents and visitors to Western North Carolina had but one method of mass transportation. If they wanted to travel to locations in Tennessee and North Carolina they had to hop aboard the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (ET&WNC). The railway operated for numerous years transporting people and goods. Residents of the region came to call the train, 'Tweetsie' because the whistle made a tweet tweet noise each time it alerted people that it was coming into town. In 1950, operations on the ET&WNC railway ceased.
After the railway closed, the old coal-fire locomotive, #12 was put up for sale. Hollywood legend, Gene Autry sought to buy the train to move it to Hollywood to use it for movies. Instead of allowing "Tweetsie" as it would later be called, to be taken away from the Blue Ridge Mountains, a local businessman, Grover Robbins bought the train from Autry and decided to use it as the major draw for visitors to his planned family, theme park.
As the park plans were carried out, a three mile loop of track was laid and the train began to run again on July 4, 1957. From its beginnings in 1957 all the way to today's time period, Tweetsie Railroad has been owned and operated by the same family, the Robbins family. One of the county's first theme parks, Tweetsie was designed to be a wild, west style themed park and year after year it continues to grow and add shows, rides and attractions. The #12 Train ride remains the biggest draw and kids of all ages love the fun of riding down the track on an old steam locomotive. Each June the park welcomes Thomas the Train and friends for its annual Thomas Days Tweetsie and it seems every Thomas loving child in the southeast ventures to the park for a fun filled week. The park hosts other regular, annual shows as well and each year pays tribute to its first opening day, July 4th with a big Independence Day Tweetsie Railroad fireworks celebration.
Get ready for a thrill, enjoy rides like the Tilt a Whirl, Ferris Wheel, Round Up, and Drop tower ride, when you visit this small park. The chairlift that leads to the top of the mountain is also a great way to see some excellent views of the region. If you are weary, a bus also transports visitors to the top. Atop the mountain at Tweetsie is a small animal petting zoo where children can see small goats and even deer. In autumn, Tweetsie operates Ghost Train Tweetsie Railroad during the evening hours. The park's shows, rides and characters all turn spooky for bunches of Halloween themed fun.
