Churches of the Frescoes
Visiting the Churches of the Frescoes is one of the popular Things to Do Ashe County NC. The churches belong to The Parish of the Holy Communion and are located in Glendale Springs and West Jefferson NC respectively. Each of the idyllic mountain churches houses frescoes by the artist Ben Long.
Ground officially broke on the grounds of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in 1905, although the parish supported missionaries and various Episcopal settlers for years prior. Nestled in West Jefferson, the church houses, "The Mystery of Faith", as well as a frescoe of the Virgin Mary pregnant with the Messiah. Another of John the Baptist is housed in a steel case on the wall. Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs houses a life sized frescoe of The Last Supper.
Ben Long met and arranged to complete the series of frescoes for the parish back in the early 1970's when the Rector of Saint Mary's Parish was at the time, Reverend Faulton Hodge. Long was a renowned artist that specialized in the unique frescoe style of painting. Frescoe painting is an art form in which the artist presses the pigment into wet plaster. The pigment becomes bonded with the plaster and hardens to produce a surface that lasts over a longer period of time than most other styles of painting. Michelangelo's frescoes on the Sistine Chapel in Rome are some of the most significant frescoes that exist. Long blessed Ashe County with these frescoes and now the Churches of the Frescoes welcomes thousands each year.
